Spencer Park Trip

On March the 10th, some of the classes in Hornby Primary went to a trip in Spencer Park. I learnt some things and I also enjoyed being there. If you want to know more, here is the story, bye!

W.A.L.T Write an information report that informs the audience.

Success Criteria
I know I will be successful when….
  • I use an opening statement that explains the subject of the report.

  • The opening statement is followed by sentences that describe the event; what you saw, what you did, how you felt, what you learnt.
  • Each paragraph focuses on a different aspect of the topic; travelling, the beach, the lagoon walk, playground.
  • A general statement about the topic usually rounds off the report.

On the 10th of March, we (Ako Ngatahi) and some of the other classes from here, went to a trip to Spencer Park. In this trip, we saw many this like cobwebs, horses and many more. We also did a Challenge that was very cool.

First of all in the bus, I was with Khush and Vann on the seat. In there we chatted and laughed too, we also made some jokes and then relax. Then also Vann and I made a bit of a prank, when Khush slept we drew a figured on Khush's cheek and then told him when he woke up while we laugh.

Suddenly, we were there! We were finally at Spencer Park. The first thing we had to do is go to our groups. Before we  went to the bus we were put in groups with the other classes. (I’m in group 1). Then we were put in groups again. Group 1 did the lagoon walk first.
It was a bit tiring because the walk was quite long and the path was “quite muddy” if you may say. We saw some horses on our way, they were very big, and also very tamed, but they don’t really like noises. Also we “saw” some well....you know, “digested food” that comes out of your “rear end”. The weather was really hot, because before we went on that trip, it was raining a bit. At last, we saw the place where you watch the birds at.But I’m gonna say it was a bit boring on the fact that we didn’t see the birds very well, but at least we saw them, and the horses.

Next we returned on the real park and rested for a bit and played on the playground.
Then again, we walked to the next destination. We went to the beach that is in there.

The path was a bit bumpy and also very dusty. There were many dried trees and I think that place was really good for body dumping (jokes). It was really hot, hotter because there were no shades cause the trees were dry, yet thankfully we had our school hats and the wind became a bit cooler.

When we arrived at the beach, we had a choice to take off or keep our shoes on. Well being “cool” that I am I took off my shoes. In the beach we needed to get some beach treasures like drift wood and also some sea shells. We can’t find them so we needed to dig so we can find the treasures, even so we didn’t really find many. Then, after the treasure finding, the teachers and adults decided to do a challenge.

In the challenge we had to make a sandcastle in 5-12 mins. When we finished and they had to decide who won the adult/ teachers didn’t really say which group won, because we had to go back quickly. I tried to put my shoes on but then, my feet were sandy. Well looks who’s “cool” now? I said. I thought, well apparently it’s not me. That is why I had to walk with sandy feet in my shoes.

Still, the path we took after that, was short. Our group, group 1 came back and ate our lunch. Then before we finish, the other groups came and also ate their lunch.

Finally, we finished playing in the playground and then went back to school and the went home. After that trip I learnt many things, but this is my favourite. There are many hunters hideout in there, isn’t that cool? Even though the trip was a bit tiring, I still loved it.
Now after that trip, we are gonna make a sculpture using the “treasures” that we found, so stay tuned.

My Persuasive Writing!

These past weeks we have been learning about health and nutrition. We had learnt about how to be healthy and even how to choose your food. Then at the 3rd week of this term we have to write a persuasive writing about our favorite food. I chose kalamay because I absolutely love it, after I had research some facts about this food and then wrote them in my own words and add what I already know about it. I really hope you'll be persuade to eat this Filipino food because I am, yet see you next time; Bye!!!!

Hook:
There is a sticky food that means “sugar” and it’s a delicacy in the Philippines, what is it? Kalamay!! It is a delicacy that is similar to Nian gao which is also a delicacy, but in China. Also it is a cousin of the dodol which is found over Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and in some parts of the Philippines!!! Did you know, that there is not just one kind of kalamay around the Philippines? Because there are dozens! From the dozens of region that are in there!

Arguments:

It is not a grain. But is made with it, it might not beat a vegetable with it’s nutrition, yet is good. The kalamay have many calories that would make you fast as flash, it depends on what ingredients you choose. The kalamay has only a bit of sugar and fat so don’t worry, the fat and sugar that you put in it can be also good for your nutrition so you can keep a balance diet. If you're feeling down and a bit tired you could eat kalamay to make your body feel as strong as superman in a flash. (Down below are the nutrition facts about the kalamay na latik)

It could have many usage like a delicious, delectable dessert and can also  be an exchange for a  mouth watering cake, if you don’t have one. It gives lots  and lots of energy and very healthy. And also you can make different kinds of them, like the kalamay na ube/purple, kalamay na latik, sapin sapin and many other more. You can even make one right now.

There are dozens of the kinds of the kalamay but this is my personal favorite, the kalamay na latik. This is the recipe.

First you will need

2¼ cups muscovado or brown sugar
2 cups coconut milk
2 cups coconut cream
½ cup water
½ cup of Latik
to make kalamay

Then just follow this steps

  1. Firstly prepare a plate or round pan that you will use for the kalamay. Then start by placing a clean banana leaf or a parchment paper over it. Brush some cooking oil or coconut oil on the banana leaf or if it is parchment paper don’t put the oil. After set it aside.
  2. Now what you will do is combine the coconut milk, coconut cream, water, and glutinous rice flour in a deep cooking pot. Next  mix it well until the texture of the mixture becomes soft. You can use wire whisk if necessary.
  3. Afterwards turn the heat on to medium. Now Gradually stir it until the mixture starts to get hot or warm. While stirring you might notice that lumps will form,  but continue to stir until bubbles appear.
  4. At this moment set the heat to low-medium. Next continue to stir for about15 minutes.
  5. Add the sugar. After mix well to incorporate.  Continue your mixing for the next 30 to 40 minutes or just until the mixture becomes really thick and the color turns dark brown.
  6. Now you can transfer the thick mixture on the prepared plate or pan that we made.
  7. You can spread and top with latik if you want to( the recipe is at a website, here is the link latik.

Let it cool for a few minutes or eat it hot.

Ending:

All of that are only in one kind of kalamay. So now think of the kalamay there still is. More nutrients, more treats, more taste. Sometimes it can also be bad, yes. But the kalamay have many nutrients, you can either choose other stuff to put it on the top when it’s done so it will be more healthier or take a fruit and eat it with the kalamay. Also you can taste the taste of what filipinos taste, taste the food of many other religions, is a great treat and the most delicious, most yummiest treat in the world.  Also when eating it, it gives me such energy that I want to run around the world. Now that you know a bit more of the delicious food you can make, then eat it, or maybe do some more research about it, but I hope you will atleast try the Kalamay.
Now these are the strategy that I used in my writing

St. Nicholas Feast

This is a short story of what I did on the time I was on the Philippines. We did this for the past week to tell everybody what is the story about. I really enjoyed what I did and enjoyed writing this. I wish you have a nice day, bye!!!
At the 30th of December, we wanted to celebrate the festival of St. Nicholas , because we always celebrate it and so we can get together. My aunties, uncles, grandparents, cousin, parents and I were in  there, always. We celebrated it at Philipines in my house. On that time I desired or wanted to have lots of fun, everyone will attend and have a bit of good luck.

On the 29th of December at evening, we planned what will we cook, we thought of ingredients that we need, all of us thought of really yummy food which we need yummy ingredients too. While I listen to the conversation I felt like a chief with other chiefs that want to cook  for a president. I can hear the Ideas that filled my brain and I can smell the odor, it is  like a food of a god (or maybe not that I imagine that it is really just my dog’s well you know, outside, but I’m just changing the smell by Imagining it). Some of the food we thought were, Lutung kamatis that need tomato sauce and crabs, BBQ which needed pork and and seasoning, Sherbet which is like Ice cream, desserts like Ube and some more.
( there are some more ingredients in those food and there are more food but I don’t want to write them all and I forgot about them).

Next day my grandparents went off at 3:30 am to get the ingredients that we need.(The reason I didn’t come because I was still asleep and I’m a bit tired)

They came back prepared what they need I heard the noise and
I woke up I helped them I mixed what I need to mix and do what I need to do.

I detected the smell and I know that something was suspicious, there was scent of Ube, but we were not cooking Ube. Who was?.........

There was a noise. (Clack!). I went out, went to where the noise started. I saw somebody cooking, she had a short hair that have a color of brown, after that…..
I remembered that my great grandma was cooking at the other kitchen. She was cooking one of the favourite Ube.

My mum and my other grandma told me to clean and arrange the chairs where the visitors will sit on. I took all the chairs, tables and couches, then put them on the right place. Finally it was done, but I still needed  to clean them.

Coming next, most of the food were done. We serve them on the big table and position them one by one. From the lightest to the heaviest we serve them together, with the help of my mum and grandparents.

While putting the food on the table near the kitchen, my Dad's mother that is my grandparent came with my cousins who is their grandmother and all of them in pulung masle came into our house like my cousins husband, and their child, my other grandparents that was my dad’s mother’s and father's cousins.Next up my great grandparents cousin came to eat and to have a conversation with my great grandmother. My mother’s friends and my dad’s friends came too with their children (which is a lot!)

The temperature was hot so my parents told me to turn on the air-con so it would be more comfortable. We played, who can catch more bubbles the most, tag, “Try not to get scared challenge” and many more. ( At the “Try not to get scared challenge”, the brother of my cousin cried of horror, but nobody got in trouble)

After we played, all of our visitors went away and thanked us for the food. That is my St. Nicholas feast.

I really enjoyed all the things that we had done. I loved that most all of us were together because the only thing I care about is my family. It was a fun experience that I had, one of the most exciting things I had ever experienced.  I was also sad because that day was a step closer of going away from the Phillipines.

The Most Horrible Migration Day (First Draft)

W.A.L.T recall  events through the eyes of an animal.

First Draft

The Most Horrible Migration Day

That day was a great day, sunny but windy in the Savannah’s most popular river. It wasn't  really hot but it was warm, the sun was bright, the wind was perfect and that day was May 6 my birthday. The most perfect day for me and the perfect day for us buffalo to migrate. It was just me, dad, mum, my grandmas, my granddads, my cousins, my aunts and my uncles. We were going on the grassland because there was no more grass in there. But they call it migration. I always hid in my dad and my mum’s shadow because I'm just a calf I didn't know what to do, I only know to  follow my dad and my mum. If there is something that I'm super afraid of, it is what I met this migration day. I'm lucky I survived.

I knew there was something hiding in those dry bushes, I could taste the fear in the air and I could hear the breath of something that was terrifying. I told my dad about it but he did not listen to me and then he said I was  just daydreaming, so I just ignored it.

My dad stopped in silence and heard something. Immediately we ran, we saw lions coming after us. Suddenly they chose to chase then eat me! My heart was beating as if it was getting smash by a mallet while my feet were burning like they were in lava on a volcano. I was out of balance, all of a sudden I fell in the water, they have got me. I felt the pressure, weight, their sharp and big teeth on my neck and body.

I saw something in the muddy brown deep river. A crocodile! He grabbed me in my back, I felt his small but razor sharp teeth. I felt pain on my both sides of my body. Then the lions pulled me out of the water so the crocodile could not get me for his lunch.

I thought it was my last day on my dear Earth, but then I smelled something that was familiar for me. Finally I saw my family, they came back for me, I was crying with joy.  They thought of a way to save me, immediately my mum attacked. Instantly they all attacked at the lions and chased them around the place. They freed me from the furious lions. I was happy while crying, I stayed in the middle part of the herd so I would be safe.

Thank god I was saved by my family, I never knew what to do without them. I hit two birds with a one stone  by accomplishing or managing to escape from those two predators that was my most biggest fears. I felt joyfully happy and thankful to god and to my family that they saved me from the predators that were terrifying for me. I wish that will never ever have an experience like that again.
